The concept of the CIS Games was proposed by the Russian Federation and received approval from the CIS Council of Leaders on September 28, 2018, during a meeting in Dusambé.

- Water sports: rowing, canoeing, swimming
- Combat sports: wrestling, freestyle, Greco-Roman, judo, sambo, karate, taekwondo, boxing
- Team and racket sports: basketball 3x3, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, fencing, archery
- Other sports: gymnastics, chovgan (a traditional Azerbaijani equestrian game), shooting, football (U-16), and trap shooting.
